LEAVES OF THREE, BEWARE OF ME!!!!!
- Poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac are all plants that contain URUSHIOL, an oil that can cause an allergic reaction of the skin in people who are sensitive to the oil.
- It is spread by direct contact-actually touching a plant that contains the oil; by indirect contact-touching anything that is contaminated by the oil, such as gardening tools or pet fur; or by airborne contact-the burning of plants that contain the oil.
- Symptoms include: itchy skin, red streaks, small bumps or hives, or blisters filled with fluid.
- The rash starts 8-48 hours after exposure to the urushiol. You can get a delayed reaction that may appear for up to two weeks after exposure.
- It is not contagious.
- Serious symptoms may include: swelling of the fact, mouth, or eyelids; widespread large blisters that ooze large amounts of fluid.
- Without treatment, the rash may last up to 3 weeks.
- Home treatment includes cool compresses, immediate washing with soap and water, antihistamines, calamine lotion, or oatmeal baths.
- More moderate to severe cases may need medical attention: you may require steroids as a cream, pills, or injection.
